A Volunteer’s View

blog post image

I am not a DJ, producer or live PA artist. I don’t fancy myself a dancer, or an artist of any kind.  At first glance I am not a very likely person to be involved in a huge electronic music show. But that’s the great thing about VEMF. It’s not just a show - it’s a participatory event that we as a community rally together to create. It’s a showcase of what makes our community special. With over 100 volunteers (above and beyond our lovely and talented local performers), it is truly a festival put on by the community for the community.

I’ll never forget my first year as volunteer coordinator with VEMF in 2008. Standing in Centennial Square as dusk set in, watching so many smiling faces dancing their hearts out, thinking of all the wonderful people who put their time, energy, love, sweat and tears into the festival and thinking ‘We made this’!  Volunteering with VEMF is our chance to give a gift to the electronic music community on the Island, and to greater community in Victoria. It isn’t just an opportunity to practice some employable skills, or to get into some of the most fun after-parties around for free, or meet some cool people (though those are some of the perks that come along with the package). It’s an opportunity to give a little piece of yourself and to be a vital part of something truly amazing.

VEMF is growing every year and there are many opportunities to get involved! If you are interested in being a part of the fun, log in and fill out the volunteer application. Make sure you let us know if you have any particular skills or ideas that you’d like to contribute. I can’t wait to work with so many of you again this year. I know we’ll create something really amazing for 2011.
